First JCG Observer Participation in North Pacific High Seas Patrols by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada Aircraft ~Towards realization for "Free and Open Indo-Pacific"~

From June 29 (Sun.) to 30 (Mon.), a Japan Coast Guard (JCG) officer participated for the first time as an observer in a patrol on the high seas of the North Pacific conducted by Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) as part of Canada's Operation North Pacific Guard, and coordinated under the North Pacific Coast Guard Forum (NPCGF). The patrol was conducted by DFO using an aircraft in cooperation with the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker "Sir Wilfrid Laurier". The JCG, together with the Korea Coast Guard (KCG), participated in the patrol as part of international cooperation and sought to share expertise and build trust with relevant overseas organizations.

3 Results Summary

  • The patrol was conducted by an aircraft chartered by the DFO with one JCG officer (International Strategy Div., Administration Dept.) as an observer in cooperation with the CCG icebreaker "Sir Wilfrid Laurier".
  • Through this patrol we were able to share knowledge with partner countries on the current status of vessels navigating in the North Pacific Ocean, monitoring methods etc., and to foster mutual trust.
  • The JCG will continue to promote cooperation and collaboration with coast guard agencies of other countries and other organizations to realize a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific".
