Capacity Building Support for the Republic of Marshall Islands Coast Guard Agency

Overview

The Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT) has been supporting the enhancement of maritime law enforcement capabilities of the Republic of the Marshall Islands' coast guard agency (SEA PATROL and others) and related institutions under the cooperation framework of the Nippon Foundation and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation since FY2023.

During the latest dispatch, the MCT conducted a series of training programs including a lecture on international law, rope work, rescue training for persons adrift at sea using lifesaving equipment and hands-on sessions on emergency first aid for burns, fractures and bleeding as well as CPR with AED and rope splicing techniques.

Additionally, cadets of the JCGA training vessel ITSUKUSHIMA (JCG Cadets) which called at Majuro as part of a global ocean  voyage participated in joint training with SEA PATROL and others to practice patient transport using rescue equipment. The government representatives of the Marshall Islands, member of the U.S. Embassy and the Australian government representatives also observed this training.

SEA PATROL and others plus JCG Cadets conducted mutual vessel and facility tours and deepened their mutual understandings and fostered a greater sense of international awareness after their training.

Besides, at the time of「ITSUKUSHIMA」 departure from the Marshall Islands, navigation and VHF exercise were also conducted by using both side vessels.

The JCG will continue to strengthen cooperation with other coast guard agencies to realize a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)". The JCG will also actively engage in providing technical assistance to coast guard agencies in the Indo-Pacific region.
