Collision①Foreign Container Vessel 4,450t②Foreign Cargo Ship 8,460tOctober 26th, 2006Kanmon KaikyoAround 18:57, offshore of Mojisaki, a container vessel bound to Fukuyama Citywas sailing eastward and suddenly steered its course toward Shimonoseki whileremaining at the center of the route, which created a risk of collision with othervessels. Kanmon Kaikyo Vessel Traffic Service Center had contacted the vesseland guided them to return quickly to the right side of the route. As there was noresponse, the center had provided an approaching westbound cargo ship withthe information. Around 18:58, the westbound ship began to turn to the left (port) by avoiding acollision with the eastbound vessel as it began to turn to the right (starboard). Then the center contacted the cargo ship with instructions to continue sailing atthe right side of the route. However, the ship continued to turn around to the leftat low speed so the other vessel made a rapid right turn, which successfullyprevented a collision. Furthermore, the cargo ship came into a position of blocking the routetemporarily. The center provided sailing vessels nearby with the properinformation and the ships steered off the route to avoid a collision.Cases of Marine Accidents Prevented in Congested Water Area ⑨1857185818581859Kitakyushu CityShimonoseki CityKanmon Kaikyo Traffic Route①Container Vessel②Cargo Ship1859Types of PreventedAccidents :Target Vessel :Date :Sea Area :Summary :Track Chart
