Cases of Marine Accidents Prevented in Congested Water Area ⑦Collision①Foreign Cargo Ship 952t②Eastbound Vessel ※Types of vessel & gross tonnage unknownMay 9th, 2003Kurushima KaikyoAround 01:50, in the Kurushima Kaikyo Traffic Route, all the passing vesselswere supposed to take the left side of the route due to southward tidal stream ofthe time. However, a cargo ship bound from China to Okayama was taking theright side of the route and Kurushima Vessel Traffic Service Center hadaccordingly provided the ship with the proper information. However, around 02:06, the ship went off the route and began wandering, whichcreated a risk of collision with other vessels as well as going aground on a shoal.A route surveillance ship rushed to the location and guided the ship to anappropriate course and prevented an accident.Furthermore, around 02:38, the ship was going adrift due to a failure of a helm, and it created another risk of collision with 4 eastbound large vessels in thearea. The center had provided these vessels with the proper information while aroute surveillance ship was on guard, and prevented an accident. However, theship gradually drifted off shore due to a tidal stream and increased a risk ofgoing aground around 04:22. Then, the route surveillance ship approached thedrifting ship along the broadside in order to transfer crews and guided them withmeasures to avoid going aground, and around 04:35, they casted anchor at apoint which was 400m from shore.Kurushima Kaikyo Traffic RouteKurushima Kaikyo OhashiOo ShimaShoalImabari City0150020602380422Tidal Stream: SouthwardCargo ShipNaka SuidoNishi SuidoTypes of PreventedAccidents :Target Vessel :Date :Sea Area :Summary :Track Chart
