JCG provided Capacity-Building Assistance to the RMI Sea Patrol for a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific"

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) dispatched 4 members of its Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT) to the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) from 11 to 21 in May, with support from the Nippon Foundation and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, to provide technical support to the RMI Sea Patrol.
(MCT: a special team that provides foreign coast guard agencies with capacity- building on maritime safety and security)

1. During our dispatch, MCT conducted drifters rescue exercise at sea for RMI Sea patrol crews using the rescue equipment (fiber light cradle), which is often used by JCG, in collaboration with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
In addition, practical rope-work training, an introduction and training of the small boat pre-departure safety check list of JCG was also conducted.

2. RMI Sea Patrol crews worked hard on this training and commented on this drifters rescue exercise "It was our first-time training and a valuable experience".
JCG expected that this experience gained through training will be taken advantage of their activities in the Pacific region.

3. This was the second time that MCT provided capacity-building assistance for the RMI Sea Patrol. Furthermore, this is the second time that the JCG and the JMSDF worked together in the Pacific region, following the goodwill training with the Kiribati Police service in June 2023. It was the first-time collaboration between JCG and JMSDF in the RMI.

4. MCT also paid courtesy calls to Her Excellency President Heine, HON Minister of Justice Zakaras and other related RMI government officials, and exchanged views with United States and Australian government officials in RMI for the future cooperation.

5.The JCG will strengthen cooperative relationship with foreign coast guard agencies in cooperation with relevant domestic players including the Nippon foundation, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the JMSDF to make a realization of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" (FOIP) based on the rule of law through our efforts.
